Technology Management and Innovation for Defence & Security

Introduction

This module looks at the role and value of innovation and technology in organisations, with a focus on the defense and security sector. It addresses how to manage innovation and technology at both a strategic and operational level in organisations. It will also consider how to select and apply appropriate frameworks and techniques for identifying, assessing and delivering technological change at an acceptable risk.


Objectives

Upon successful completion participants will be able to:

  • Explain the relationship between innovation and competitive performance and assess the business ‘conditions’ for innovation
  • Investigate and debate the culture, mind-sets and behaviours necessary for innovation
  • Assess the role of technology in contributing to and supporting innovation and evaluate relevant emergent technologies for the Defence and Security sector
  • Critically examine how technology management links with technology strategy
  • Understand and apply a holistic framework for the effective management of technology, pertinent to the Defence and Security sector
  • Select and apply technology planning concepts and techniques including road mapping, technology auditing and technology readiness assessments

Assessment

4,000 word assignment (80% weighting), plus an in-module case study (20% weighting)

1 week; including 12 hours of lectures, 6 hours of seminars, 3 hours of tutorials and 12 hours of practical class/workshops
