Introduction

This module looks at Technology Strategy and where it sits within an organisation’s overall strategy. It considers the process of technology strategy development, reviews key influences from the international defence & security environment and looks at how to create and implement a successful technology strategy.)

Objectives

Upon successful completion participants will be able to:

  • Appraise the role of strategy in an organisation and explain how technology strategy sits within the organisation’s strategy
  • Critically review the process of strategy development within an organisation
  • Demonstrate awareness of and evaluate the key drivers for technology decisions in the International Defence & Security sector
  • Select and apply appropriate tools, techniques and approaches to the development and implementation of a technology strategy
  • Construct a plan that contributes to the development and implementation of a technology strategy in the student’s own organisation.

  • Drivers and key technology trends in the international defence & security sector
  • Process of technology strategy development
  • Review of the main academic approaches, tools and techniques for developing and implementing technology strategy
  • Strategic risk management
  • Practical approaches for the implementation of technology strategy, including Technology Roadmapping
  • Case studies
  • Simulation

Assessment

4,000 word assignment (80% weighting), plus an in-module case study (20% weighting)

Duration

1 week; including 12 hours of lectures, 9 hours of seminars nas 12 hours of practical class/workshops.
