WMG’s Associate Professor, Mairi Macintyre, is hosting a series of special 'Lunch with…' seminars, during May and early June, where she'll be chatting to senior leaders from academia and industry.

The prestigious line-up includes experts from a mix of sectors including aerospace, engineering, entertainment, energy, finance, travel and education. Companies represented include Rolls Royce UK, Innovate UK, Hong Kong Disneyland, National Grid, and many more.

The experts will be sharing their insights and experiences of crisis management including their responses to the COVID19 pandemic. They will also share their future predictions and challenges for the recovery period.

Mairi explained: “I’ve worked at WMG for 20 years and have had the privilege of growing strong, professional and personal friendships with many industry-thought leaders – a privilege I think many of us, working at the University of Warwick, have and one I felt needed to be shared.

Many of those taking part already speak regularly to students on our Master’s programme, and also help to inform how the different courses are developed. These insights, reflections and predictions contribute in a meaningful way to the bigger conversations we are all having now as we determine the new normal.”

Congratulations to all of the brilliant WMG students who graduated at the University of Warwick’s Summer Ceremony this week.

This year a total of 294 Master’s and Postgraduate Research students graduated from across WMG.

There were 266 Master’s students made up of 193 UK and overseas full-time students, and a further 73, from the part-time Master's programme.

A further 28 graduated from the Postgraduate Research programme including six EngD, 19 PhD and three Master's by Research students.

Professor David Mullins, Acting Head of WMG said: “It was a delight for us to honour the achievements of our new graduates at the degree congregation. It is a wonderful day of celebration for our students, with their family and friends, as they leave their studies to embark on the next stage of their careers.

“We wish them all the very best for their futures and the impact that each will make on their companies and communities.”

Professor Mullins added: “All of us at WMG are very proud of our alumni including Dr Roy Cheung who was also honoured at the ceremony and presented with an Honorary Doctor of Science. Dr Cheung also gave a stirring speech to our graduates on the opportunities that lie ahead.”

A record number of almost 1450 students have enrolled at WMG this academic year.

A huge 1,241 people from 63 countries, are now studying full-time, with a further 27 studying part-time, on one of our 15 Management, Business or sector specific Master’s courses.

96 students have enrolled on our part-time Applied Engineering Programme, studying for a BEng degree alongside their full-time job in the engineering or technology industry. Another 11 have enrolled on our Postgraduate Engineering Degree Apprenticeship Programme.

We have welcomed our largest single intake of Research Degree students across various programmes, including seven EngDs, 24 PhDs and six MSc by Research and the first intake onto our new MSc by Research in Business Transformation.

We’ve also welcomed our first cohort of 23 full-time BSc Cyber Security students.

We’re on the lookout for three local students to help develop our new Play: Pedagogy Theory and Practice module, ready for launch in September 2018.

Mairi Macintyre, the Principal Teaching Fellow leading the programme explains: “With our colleagues at Warwick Business School and the Learning and Development Centre, we successfully applied for funding from the Institute for Advanced Teaching and Learning (IATL) at Warwick to develop the new module in a partnership with Design Museum London and Royal Holloway University of London plus international colleague at Leiden University in the Netherlands and Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.”

“We’ve now set up a special steering group with all the partners, and are looking to recruit three creative students to join us to help bring the module to life. Students will be paid for their time and will need to commit half a day a week for a 10 week period. Depending on our progress it may also lead to a summer internship.

“Play is, all too often, best viewed as ‘just for kids,’ but it has a big part to play in higher education too. Its theoretical home lies somewhere between philosophical and pedagogical and its application spans all disciplines. If we can successfully develop it for higher education it can be transferred into industry driving creativity and innovation.”

We are delighted that WMG has been awarded seven tuition fee bursaries through the UK Government’s National Cyber Security Programme, for individuals to retrain in cyber security.

Sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the bursaries are part of a pilot programme to address the significant mismatch in the supply and demand of adequately skilled cyber security professionals.

The project has been a huge help to the seven students who wouldn’t have been able to take up their studies without financial support. Current MSc Cyber Security and Management student, Ella-Karita Halsey commented: “I was overwhelmed when I was offered a bursary. I believe the bursary is set to propel me into a career within cyber security, and the GCHQ provisionally certified route of study gives a wide range of interesting topics, that are recognized as industry standard within the cyber community”. Davina Pattni also received a bursary to study for her MSc Cyber Security and Management: “The bursary has given me an opportunity to fast track my career within the cyber security industry."

This year WMG, at the University of Warwick, saw 21 International Chevening Scholars from 14 countries start their studies.

The Chevening Scholarship is aimed at developing global leaders. Coming to WMG from Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, China, Iraq, Turkey, Kenya, Gambia, Mexico, Uruguay, and Jordan, this sees a 700% increase from 2014/15.

Chevening Scholarships are one of the UK’s global scholarship scheme, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and aimed at developing global leaders. The programme helps students from all around the world study at universities such as the University of Warwick; which has been placed in the top 10 universities in the UK by The Guardian and The Times, and is in the top 100 universities on the QS World Rankings and the THE World Rankings.

The Cyber Security Centre at WMG, University of Warwick, has teamed with IBM (NYSE: IBM) to develop a module for its Cyber Security master’s course portfolio which addresses key strategic cyber security issues relating to business, particularly from the perspective of an organisation's Chief Information Security Officer.

With as many as 1.5 million unfilled cyber security jobs worldwide expected by 2020, the low availability of professionals with specialised cyber skills is one of the biggest issues facing organisations looking to defend their core business systems against cyber-attacks.

The WMG Cyber Security Centre team and IBM are addressing this skills gap by building a as it has been developed in collaboration with an enterprise security provider of international standing. The fully assessed module began in May 2016 and is part of the University of Warwick’s MSc in Cyber Security and Management, designed for those wishing to develop a career as a cyber security professional, or to take a leading technical or managerial role in an organisation critically dependent upon data and information communication technology. The course is available to study part-time, in order to attract business professionals who want to have the option to study alongside their work.

A team of academics from WMG, at the University of Warwick, have received a highly commended award at prestigious conference EurOMA 2016 at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

The accolade was given for their work in applying technology to learning in the delivery of WMG’s Service Management and Design Masters programme.

The European Operations Management Association (EurOMA) is the premier European association for academics in the fields of production management, operations management, and supply chain management.

WMG, at the University of Warwick, has received an accreditation from the Association for Project Management (APM) for its industry relevance, quality of teaching, and innovative material.

WMG has been collaborating with the APM for many years and this is the second accreditation that the APM has given to WMG. The previous accreditation was for the Project Management content on the Technical Accreditation Scheme, a programme for Jaguar Land Rover and Network Rail.

WMG has a longstanding reputation as a leader in Project Management education and with increasingly complex environments, large supply chains, and multi-partner projects, there is an ever growing demand from organisations to train their staff in the nuances of project management.

WMG at the University of Warwick has launched the ‘Class of 2016’, an exciting new initiative to showcase its world class education programmes, and the opportunities they offer people at any stage of their career.

WMG’s Chairman, Professor Lord Bhattacharyya, is passionate about education and ensuring that industry has the right skills base on which to sustain its future.

He explains: ‘I started out as an apprentice, and it is that grounding that has shaped my whole career. I worked my way up through the ranks, so I know first-hand what it takes to work hard to achieve career goals. I feel strongly that everyone, at any stage of their career, should have the opportunity to develop their skills, which is why workplace learning and technical education is at the very core of WMG.”
