Targeted at young academics in general and alumni of the EurOMA Doctoral Seminar in particular, the EurOMA Young Scholars Workshop is conceived as a way to support the career development of young scholars in the field of operations management (OM) by teaching and sharing with them major skills needed in an academic career. Important skills are related to:

• Supervising MSc and PhD students.
• Teaching OM to MSc and MBA students.
• Designing and developing research projects in OM.
• Developing your career – managing your way through academia.
• Developing theoretically rigorous and managerially relevant OM research.

Each year one of the above subjects is developed on a rolling base. At the same time, the initiative is aimed at developing the community of young OM scholars, stimulating network development, and providing opportunities to meet and discuss relevant topics.

The theme of the 2020 workshop is Teaching OM to MSc and MBA students.

Target group and eligibility

The target group of the workshop is young OM academics who aim at a continued academic career. Priority is given to EurOMA Doctoral Seminar alumni. The 2020 workshop is open to EurOMA members participating in the 2020 annual conference, who have presented their PhD thesis in or after 2015.

The number of participants is limited to 30 young scholars, who have registered for the conference.

Young scholars who participated in the 2019 workshop will receive an invitation and have to confirm their participation in the 2020 workshop by sending an e-mail to hboer at business dot aau dot dk by Sunday 26th April 2020. First time applicants are requested to send a CV and proof of their EurOMA membership by e-mail to hboer at business dot aau dot dk by Sunday 26th April 2020. Notifications of acceptance will be sent out not later than Friday 1st May 2020.

Session leader bios

Atanu Chaudhuri

Atanu Chaudhuri is an Associate Professor of Operations and Technology Management at Durham University Business School (United Kingdom) and an Adjunct Associate Professor of Operations and Supply Chain Management at Aalborg University (Denmark). He has more than eight years of industrial experience in the automotive industry, consulting and research – all in India, and more than nine years of academic experience in India, Denmark and the UK. He was awarded Teacher of the Year in 2017 by Aalborg University’s Study Board of Industry and Global Business Development. His research focuses on supply chain implications of additive manufacturing, and supply chain risk management and resilience. Atanu is Senior Associate Editor of the International Journal of Logistics Management. He is also head of the Digital Supply Chain working group of the Mobility Goes Additive network.

Paul Coughlan

Paul Coughlan is Professor in Operations Management, Associate Dean and Director of Accreditation & Quality Assurance at Trinity Business School, Trinity College Dublin (Ireland). In his research, he explores collaborative strategic improvement of operations through network action learning. He has contributed to EU-funded research projects focused on manufacturing improvement, innovation in the food sector and, currently, the environmental sustainability of water distribution. He collaborates with researchers in different domains and also in practice, both nationally and internationally. His work on action research involving companies engaged in action learning has led to continuing methodology development and to specialized doctoral training in action research and learning through the EIASM doctoral network. Paul is a Fellow of Trinity College Dublin, an Honorary Fellow of EurOMA and an Honorary Member of CINet.

Matteo Kalchschmidt

Matteo Kalchschmidt is Professor of Project and Innovation Management at the University of Bergamo (Italy). He received a PhD in Industrial Engineering from Politecnico di Milano (Italy) in 2002. He conducts research in global and sustainable supply chain management. On this topic he has published several works in international journals. He has been director of several executive programs for MIP-Politecnico di Milano and SdM, the School of Management at Università degli Studi di Bergamo.

Harry Boer

Harry Boer is Professor of Organization Strategy and Design at the Center for Industrial Production at Aalborg University (Denmark). He holds a master and PhD in Management Engineering, both from the University of Twente (The Netherlands). He teaches operations management, organization design and innovation theory. His research focuses on continuous innovation, conceptualized as the interaction between operations, continuous improvement and radical innovation. He is an Honorary Professor of Corvinus University in Budapest (Hungary) and an Honorary Fellow of EurOMA.
