WMG student’s success at national cyber competition

Imogen Bartin, a second-year BSc Cyber SecurityLink opens in a new window student from WMG at The University of Warwick, was part of the winning team at the UK Cyber Team CompetitionLink opens in a new window.

The competition, delivered in partnership with the UK Government and the SANS Institute, invited 18-25 year olds with a passion for cyber security to put their skills to the test.

The competition consisted of three Capture the Flag (CTF) rounds. Each round involved interactive exercises designed to replicate networks, systems, and applications in a safe, isolated setting, allowing players to build skills and gain confidence without compromising a live production environment.

Over 1,000 players registered to compete in the competition. The first two rounds took place online, and the top 200 players attended the live final held in-person at The Vox, Birmingham.

Imogen Bartin said: “The competition was an amazing experience to learn new methods to problems that I hadn't seen before and to learn more about different aspects of CTFs in general. I also had a great opportunity to develop my teamwork skills, being thrown into a competitive environment with teammates I hadn't met before is an experience that not many competitions can offer, and I will definitely be on the lookout for similar competitions to develop my skills in the future!”

Imogen has since earned herself a place on the UK Cyber Team, one of 30 players from the competition who have been selected to join the team. The UK Cyber Team will gain access to training and mentorship from industry experts to help prepare them to tackle other cyber security teams around the world.

Dr Harjinder LallieLink opens in a new window, Associate Professor - Reader in Cyber Security, at WMG, said: “Congratulations to Imogen on being part of the winning team in this fierce competition! Her success is a testament to her exceptional skills and impressive teamwork. We look forward to seeing what’s next for Imogen on the cyber security stage.”

Several other WMG BSc Cyber Security students also reached the live final of the competition, including: Georgie Bishop, Joseph, Jamie Madden, Aaron Champaneri, Dan Pritchard, Rhys Adams, Samuel Kamas, Tom Steer, and Rhys Davies.
