WMG welcomes Binghamton University researchers as part of US-UK academic agreement
Professor Louis PiperLink opens in a new window from WMG, University of Warwick, was pleased to welcome representatives from Binghamton UniversityLink opens in a new window (USA).
This visit was an opportunity to showcase WMG’s world-class facilities and explore future collaborations.
Professor of Battery Innovation and Research Head of the Battery Materials & Cells group at WMG, Louis Piper explained: “Both WMG and Binghamton University are unique in their respective countries with industry-aligned pilot lines and prototype battery manufacturing and recycling capabilities.
“Both institutions are continuing to increase capabilities and facilities. For instance, WMG has recently upgraded its coating and cell assembly kit as part of the £12m Advanced Manufacturing Battery Industrialisation Centre (AMBIC).”

Earlier this year, WMG and Binghamton University entered an agreement to explore collaboration in the fields of science, technology, and education with the aim of fueling vital battery manufacturing capability in both countries.
The five-year memorandum of understanding (MoU) set the foundation to encourage the sharing of academic, scientific, and cultural experiences between the two institutions, both pioneers in the battery field.
Battery research and educational materials for training are a key element of the agreement, which will explore access to shared facilities and equipment to maximise the capabilities of both institutions.
Professor Piper added: “WMG and Binghamton University are focal points for bridging the gap between industry and academia in battery innovation and manufacturing, in the UK and US respectively, and this visit was an excellent opportunity to build on our partnership.”
Paul Malliband, Executive Director at Battery-NY, Binghamton University, said “It was a privilege to return to WMG and reconnect with colleagues in pursuit of our shared goals in battery innovation and technology.
“Our visit to WMG and the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre (UKBIC) provided the Binghamton University and Ramboll teams with valuable insights into leading-edge battery development infrastructure. This exchange of expertise—enabled by our Memorandum of Understanding with WMG—underscores the vital role of US–UK collaboration in advancing battery research and industrialisation. We look forward to deepening this partnership and making meaningful progress toward a more sustainable energy future.”
