Implementing Advanced Healthcare Solutions

We concentrate on understanding healthcare data, to provide better insights for the whole patient journey in the context of chronic conditions. Quality digital healthcare data allows professionals to make more precise, stratified/personalised and informed decisions on care provision and patient support. Moreover, the transparent use of this information can empower the individual patient in their awareness of health and wellbeing, by involving them in their own healthcare management. This is achieved through the provision of feeding back information to the individual themselves for improved understanding of their condition and lifestyle needs, through the use of digital means.

About our research

Our research focuses on human movement analytics, using signal processing and data science approaches to monitor, measure and model movement in a range of different contexts. A key focus is in the area of osteoarthritis, using measures of movement and activity to provide personalised planning of joint replacement positioning and post-surgical monitoring of recovery.

Human behaviour influences the effectiveness of medical advice and interventions. Our expertise in judgement and decision making, and subjective well being informs both the identification and implementation of health-related interventions. Use of wearable and on-the-body sensing devices make objective measures of human behaviour and behaviour change. Recently, this research has focussed on the use of financial incentives to drive physical activity behaviour change.

Focus areas

Wearable devices for movement analytics

We use data science to analyse both large and small datasets of human movement in healthcare research. Our lab utilizes state-of-the-art motion capture equipment, sensors, and Virtual/Augmented Reality systems for applications such as advanced physiotherapy and analysing physiology data from wearables and smartphones.

Patient-empowerment Solutions

Promoting wellbeing through patient-empowerment solutions (e.g., m-health and wellbeing apps) and supporting patient behavioural change.
