We're developing finite element models capable of representing the mechanical behaviour of battery cells to assist in the development of module and pack designs for vehicle applications.

A macro modelling approach, in which the cell core is treated as a homogeneous block of material, is used to facilitate integration with full vehicle crash models. Module models include the main structural components and electrical interconnects.

Our key capabilities include:

  • Electrical interconnect (e.g. cell to tab joint)
    • Characterisation (mechanical and electrical)
    • Optimisation for mechanical strength and electrical conductivity through control of process parameters
  • FE Modelling
  • Mechanical characterisation of cells (tension, torsion, compression, vibration and high speed testing)
