Case Studies

Case Studies

Investigations into the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 and iPhone 8 Plus batteries as well as other battery formats from Nissan pouch cells down to the FitBit pin cells. This will continue and build up an insightful repertoire to understanding battery performance and its limitations in commercial devices.

Mobile phone charge compromises battery lifespan

Researchers at WMG at the University of Warwick have found that use of inductive charging, whilst highly convenient, risks depleting the life of mobile phones using typical LIBs (Lithium-ion batteries)

Consumers and manufacturers have ramped up their interest in this convenient charging technology, abandoning fiddling with plugs and cables in a favour of just setting the phone directly on a charging base.

Project Turning Point

Project Turning Point

A collaboration between WMG-FAB and JLR looking at the cumulative failure modes in commercial Li-ion batteries. This involves a time-resolved testing and analysis approach to pin-point where and why battery performance starts to degrade.

The Faraday Institution Degradation Project

The Faraday Institution Degradation Project

This is a collaboration led by the University of Cambridge. WMG are focussed on designing and developing an operando SEM cell to visualise the dynamics in electrode structures and how they change as batteries age.
