Marian began her PhD on a part time basis in September, 2013 with the DLM Group, University of Warwick and still works at UHBFT. Her research is focussing on developing an integrated process and systems modelling framework which will be used to capture networks of processes, resources and their associated failures. This can be used to predict possible causes of failures based on existing systems (processes and resources) and recommend solutions to prevent their occurrence. The framework can be applied in a hospital to improve performance and also to enhance the quality of care that patients receive.

She completed her first degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering in 2002 and proceeded to study for Master’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Surrey, Guildford in 2004. After completion, she worked in various roles in the healthcare industry to gain insight into the dynamics of the industry. She later worked as Clinical researcher with MSD (Merck Sharp & Dohme) until she took up her current role as the Medical Devices Training Lead at the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHBFT) in 2009. The role is based in the Medical Engineering department of Queen Elizabeth Hospital but the work covers both hospitals in the Trust; Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) and Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB). Her primary responsibility is to ensure the safe and competent use of medical devices by all staff.
