The introduction of many new high performance materials in the market place has created new opportunities for their commercial exploitation. It is vitally important that a material’s behaviour under extreme loading is well understood, for example, how the crumple zones of a car behave in an impact. This project has developed new high-speed testing technology, which will enable materials and joints to be characterized in a consistent and effective way, for application in impact simulation software tools used by wider industry.
The commercial benefits are a reduction in risk and cost to develop innovative lightweight structural designs that comply with safety standards without the need to conduct large scale and expensive physical testing of prototypes.
