Product Evaluation Technologies


WMG's Product Evaluation Technologies (PET) group is a multi-disciplinary research team with a central goal of providing real-world solutions for various business sectors, from automotive engineering to the medical industry. Through cutting-edge research and technologies, the team has developed capabilities in the areas of Advanced Metrology, Human Machine Interface (HMI), and Applied Visualisation. The team is working actively with numerous companies to ensure the latest technologies are implemented in a practical and creative way to cut costs and add business value. The Product Evaluation Technologies group spans WMG's research areas of Metrology, Computed Tomography and Applied Visualisation and are also part of the WMG centre High Value Manufacturing Catapult.

Research Areas

Metrology is the science of measurement and allows the advancement of industry, science and society in general. The ability to assess manufacturing quality and to identify and resolve issues as early as possible is a critical aspect of new product development. Measuring a product's internal and external geometrical features needs to be quick and accurate, whether the component is the size of a small screw or as large as a whole car.

Computed Tomography
X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) utilises a series of radiographs that are reconstructed into a 3D model that provides data of the outer surface and structure of the scanned specimen as well as the inner structure and any potential defects. This non-destructive, non-contact technology allows the examination of defects such as porosity and provide accurate measurements.


The PET group has a strong background in manufacturing quality and measurement technologies in the automotive industry. Facilities include:

  • Climate controlled evaluation studio with controlled lighting for colour harmony assessment, and a flush mounted, twin column CNC Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) with off-line programming capabilities
  • iNEXIV VMA-4540 CNC video measuring system provides a large XYZ stroke and a wide field of view. The touch-probe-ready model VMA-4540 is ideal for a wide variety of industrial measuring applications.
  • K-Scan MMDx walk-around laser scanner for portable metrology applications. The scanner is tracked by the K-CMM Optical Tracker, so that operators can measure anywhere needed.
  • Benchmark Touchstar switchgear measurement equipment, capable of measuring force/torque vs displacement characteristics of conventional push switches and rotary controls
  • Nikon XT H 225/320 Microfocus CT scanner examines parts with approximate working volume of Ø 0.3m by 0.6m height for non-destructive investigation, flaw detection, porosity calculation, digital volume correlation, dimensional measurement and reverse engineering.
  • Zeiss Versa 520 X-ray CT scanner is capable of 3D non-destructive imaging of small objects (<90mm) and materials samples from a 25 micron resolution down to 170 nm, restricted by the size of the part.
