Forming Limit Curve Prediction

Forming Limit Curve Diagram

The Forming Limit Curve (FLC) is a crucial tool in simulating sheet metal forming processes. Its reflection of materials’ capability to undergo plastic deformation without necking is used as a pass/fail criterion during feasibility studies. Comparison of simulation results with the FLC highlights potentially problematic areas (tearing, wrinkling, etc.) of component designs, which are then subject to component/tooling redesign.

An accurate FLC prediction tool offers numerous benefits for simulation engineers. Predictive tools offer opportunities to get products to-market more efficiently by reducing the dependency on FLC experimentation. Increased levels of accuracy provide greater confidence in simulation results, allowing the full potential of the material and process to be realised.
