Advanced Steel Research Centre

WMG's Advanced Steel Research Centre (ASRC) sits within the Advanced Manufacturing and Materials Centre. The Centre has been constructed and equipped as part of a £14.5m award from EPSRC.

Research, which is led by Professor Claire Davis (Thermo-mechanical Processing) and Professor Barbara Shollock (Advanced Characterisation and Coatings). Supporting is Professor Sridhar Seetharaman whose research focusses on physico-chemical aspects of iron and steel manufacturing.

The building is fitted out with state of the art equipment and research facilities, including advanced characterisation facilities, which will provide a unique national resource and provide a critical mass of research excellence that positions the UK at the forefront of the international iron and steel research agenda. By locating their R&D centre at the University, Tata Steel will work closely with the Advanced Steel Research Centre and leverage the expertise and facilities of WMG's Steels Processing team to develop sustainable and competitive operations which can provide customers and supply chain partners with new value-added products and services.

The Centre’s research combines disciplines of materials, physics, chemistry, mechanical and chemical engineering, manufacturing, mathematics, statistics and computer science to address hypothesis driven fundamental questions, enabling new generation value-added products for major steel application sectors including automotive, construction, energy & power, engineering and lifting & excavating.
