Huge congratulations to both Dr Stephanie Schnurr and Dr Daniel Dauber on winning Transforming Education Awards from Warwick Students' Union!

The Transforming Education Awards provide a space to celebrate staff members who have gone above and beyond to support their students. These awards are completely led by students - the categories and criteria were created by students with nominations from students; and the awarding decisions made by students.

Daniel Dauber won an award in ‘Innovative Teaching’ and Stephanie Schnurr won two awards in ‘Supporting Student Wellbeing’ and in ‘Outstanding Feedback’.

Jo Angouri, lead author and Warwick’s Academic Director for Education and Internationalisation, has been working with the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities on a new landmark paper on the future of research led education.

Join Jo and her colleagues at the launch event webinar ‘Reimagining Research-led education in a digital age’ on Friday 4 June where colleagues will discuss key recommendations for how European universities can introduce radical interventions, become more inclusive and transnational in response to the digital, post-pandemic age.

Congratulations to Professor Jo Angouri following the release of materials outlining practical strategies to medical teams as they adapt to working in restrictive Level 3 PPE.

These outputs are as a result of the ‘Teamwork in the Covid-19 Zone’ study (supported by an Economic and Social Research Council IAA funding grant) led by Professor Jo Angouri working with Dr Chris Turner, a Consultant in Emergency Medicine at the University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust.

This unique and timely study is part of an exciting ongoing collaboration between Professor Angouri and Dr Turner on leadership and teamwork in trauma settings, and one of the few projects bringing together Sociolinguistics and Emergency Medicine.

Since the emergence of Covid-19, healthcare staff have been required to wear FFP3 PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) in the resuscitation of the sickest patients. This includes wearing a full facemask, eye protection, gloves and surgical gown as an essential part of protecting themselves, colleagues and patients. PPE creates a physical barrier which restricts body movement, hearing, lip reading and peripheral vision. These sensory limitations have changed the way medical teams work and engage with colleagues and patients.

Professor Angouri commented: “By observing simulated scenarios we were able to gain an authentic glimpse of how emergency teams are adapting to the challenges of communicating when wearing Level 3 PPE, and to identify and share good practice.”

This year, WICAL will be held online (28th - 30th June 2021) and we look forward to welcoming even more scholars, presenters, and attendants from across the world. Our theme is ‘Crossing Boundaries’, so we welcome interdisciplinary topics in the area of Applied Linguistics.

In a new book launched this week Intercultural Politeness: Managing Relations across Cultures, Professor Helen Spencer-Oatey of the Department of Applied Linguistics and her co-author Professor Dániel Z. Kádár of the Hungarian Research Institute for Linguistics (NYTI) explore how people relate across cultural boundaries, a topic which is increasingly important in our interconnected world.

Helen Spencer-Oatey, has additionally published a Cambridge University Press blog on 'Rapport Management - an alternative to Unconscious Bias Training', which also explores some of the themes connected to the book.
