Research Interests

Psychology of language, bilingualism, biliteracy, second language learning. The relationship between language and thinking in bilinguals and second language learners. Reading and metalinguistic awareness in biliterates (especially biscriptals) and second language readers. Effects of orthography on second language phonology. DOCTORAL SUPERVISION I welcome inquiries from qualified students who intend to pursue doctoral research in the above areas.

Biography

I am researching the psychology of bilingualism, biliteracy and second language learning, especially involving the languages I know: Chinese, English and Italian. I have published in journals and books, co-founded a journal, obtained funding by the British Academy and the Leverhulme Foundation, co-edited volumes and journal special issues, organised events, and presented papers in the UK and abroad. I have also taught at all levels, received a Supervisor of the Year award, and held a leadership position within the White Rose Doctoral Training Centre.
