Core Modules

During the first term (October to mid-December), you will take three Core modules. These introduce you to important ideas from applied linguistics, social psychology, and management and business studies which have influenced the field of intercultural professional communication. In becoming familiar with these ideas, you will develop an understanding of the notions of culture, identity, adaptation, and communication management, and the relationships between them. In Term 1, you will also begin to study one further module: Researching the Workplace.

During the second term (January to March), you will take two further Core modules, which will introduce you to the issues of intercultural competence, leadership and teamwork. You will continue to study Researching the Workplace.

During the third part of the programme (April to September), you can choose between:

  • either completing a dissertation
  • or going on an experiential placement combined with a major project.

Throughout the whole experience of preparing for the dissertation or the major project, conducting the research and writing it up, you will gain a sound understanding of the nature and range of research in intercultural communication and applied linguistics.
