CEDAR has an MPhil/PhD programme in Education and Psychology and students are able to study full or part-time. Although we may consider applications from students wishing to study in any area of CEDAR’s expertise, we are particularly interested in applications from students wishing to carry out research in our two primary research areas: Special Educational Needs and Disability across the lifespan, and Parenting and Families. Our research in these areas is mainly at the interface between education and psychology, drawing on psychosocial theories and the development and evaluation of psychoeducational intervention approaches to address questions relating to educational outcomes, broader psychological and well-being outcomes, schools, and education policy.

We also have expertise in a range of methodological approaches, including: combined methods, quantitative educational methods including secondary data analysis, and the design and delivery of complex psycho-educational controlled trial evaluations.

Our PhD programme is designed to attract students on two main career routes. First, we are interested in students wishing to develop an academic or practitioner-academic research career in SEND and/or families/parenting. These students will carry out research in collaboration with supervisors informed by education and psychology methods and theories. Second, we are interested in students who are already established practitioners in the SEND or families/parenting fields and who wish to develop their research skills and broader skills in the generation and use of research evidence.
