Projects completed in 2003

Researchers: Geoff Lindsay and Daniel Muijs

Professor Geoff Lindsay and Dr Daniel Muijs undertook a project in collaboration with and funded by Newham's Scruitiny Commission for Education. The commission wished to identify the factors important in schools' success in overcoming underachievement in Black Caribbean, Black African and White UK-born boys. The study comprised two elements. Firstly, multi-level modelling was used to indentify primary and secondary schools that were relatively successful with one or more of these groups. Secondly, visits were made to successful schools to interview staff and pupils to identify the factors at school level. In addition, members of the Scrutiny Commission undertook visits to other LEA's. A journal report was produced which was presented to and discussed by the Raising Educational Standards Conference, 23rd June 2003. The report and the recommendations were then passed to the Mayor for consideration of the recommendations.
