EVALUATION OF SURE START CHELMSLEY WOOD PROGRAMME

Researchers: Elizabeth Coates, Geoff Lindsay and Emma Phillips

CEDAR undertook a three year external evaluation of the Sure Start Project in Chelmsley Wood, Birmingham. Sure Start aims to improve the services available to families through an interdisciplinary approach in line with national and locally agreed targets. Staff were appointed to work in and with the community and a one-stop drop-in advice and learning centre has now opened on a site adjacent to the main shopping centre in Chelmsley Wood. CEDAR’s key role was to assess whether and how targets were met and to identify ways in which different services work together successfully. A central aim of Sure Start Chelmsley Wood is to encourage the involvement and empowerment of parents who it is hoped will develop the confidence and skills to maintain the initiative beyond the funding period. A final reported was produced in the summer of 2003 and its findings were presented to a conference organised by the Chelmsley Wood Sure Start Team.
