THE NATIONAL ACADEMY FOR GIFTED AND TALENTED YOUTH: EVALUATION OF THE SECOND MULTI-SITE SUMMER SCHOOL PROGRAMME 2004
Directors: Geoff Lindsay, Mairi-Ann Cullen and Dimitra Hartas
With: Elisabeth Arweck and Stephen Cullen
This evaluation, from June to end November 2004, built on CEDAR's previous evaluations of NAGTY summer school provision but added in two new elements - interviews with residential assistants responsible for the students outside the classrooms and follow-up questionnaires to students and parents once students were back at school. All seven universities hosting a NAGTY summer school were visited towards the end of the summer school where interviews were held with a sample of students and teachers from every course offered, and with a sample of residential assistants at each site. In addition, all students were asked to complete two questionnaires - one at the end of their summer school and one at the end of their first half term back in school, when parents' views were also gathered by questionnaire. The findings, based on the views of students and parents were overwhelmingly positive and provided evidence of longer term benefits in the school environment and in personal and social skills. The interviews with teaching staff and those in key management positions at the sites raised a number of issues, suggesting areas for NAGTY to develop further.
