EVALUATION OF THE ARTIST TEACHER SCHEME
Directors: Sheila Galloway with Steve Strand and Julian Stanley (CEI)
The Artist Teacher Scheme has since 1999 offered courses, summer schools and other professional development events through centres where a contemporary art gallery collaborates with a local higher education institution which has recognised standing in the visual arts. With the Scheme’s continued growth to 10 centres in England, this national evaluation was commissioned by the National Society for Education in Art and Design, Arts Council England and Creative Partnerships. It aims to assess administrative and marketing procedures, consider how the scheme affects teaching standards, and how far it supports partnership working and increased access to the arts. To do this, we reviewed documents about the Scheme’s operation and made site visits to meet course leaders, facilitators, and artist teachers. Data collection included a programme of interviews with teachers and course leaders and a questionnaire survey of all teachers participating in the Scheme between February 2005 and March 2006.
