EVALUATION OF THE DANCE AND DRAMA AWARD SCHEME, PHASE II

Directors: Jonothan Neelands, Geoff Lindsay, Robert Lindley (IER), Susan Band, Sheila Galloway and Rhys Davies (IER)

The DfES funded a second 3-year evaluation study of the Dance and Drama Awards Scheme (DADA). Our first evaluation examined the setting up and early developmental period of the scheme. As a result, a number of changes were made, but the government agreed to continue to make funding available. In Phase II our focus shifted to the examination of outcomes from the training, including the examination of student destinations. This is a much more complex issue, conceptually and practically, in this field where students often have a series of jobs. The second main focus was to explore further the effectiveness of the scheme in increasing access particularly, in this phase, to potential actors and dancers with disabilities and those from ethnic minority communities. The project combined qualitative interviews (e.g. of providers, employers and students) with annual surveys of cohorts of students after they have left their course.
