I have been Director of CEDAR since 1999, having moved to the Warwick Institute of Education in 1995 to take up the inaugural chair in special needs education and educational psychology. My first degree is in psychology and both my Masters and PhD are in educational psychology. Before joining Warwick I was Principal Educational Psychologist of the Sheffield Psychology Service. My main areas of research are special needs and inclusive education, in particular speech, language and communication needs; parenting support; the evaluation of government initiatives; assessment and measurement; and ethical issues concerning research and professional practice. I am a past President and Honorary Treasurer of the British Psychological Society and for many years led the BPS’s initiative to secure the statutory regulation of psychologists. I was the Convener of the Standing Committee on Ethics of the European Federation of Psychologists Associations 1999-2009.

I am currently engaged in several research projects – Current Research Projects. Recent work has included a consultancy to the Lamb Inquiry into parents' confidence in the special educational needs system. I was Specialist Adviser to the House of Commons Select Committee on Education for its consideration of the Bill which subsequently became the Children and Families Act, 2014.
