Research Interests

Dr Cullen is a Senior Research Fellow at CEDAR, with interests in widening participation, parenting support policies and programmes, and autism education.

Recent work includes acting as the Project Director for the Department for Education's 'Research to understand successful approaches to supporting most academically able disadvantaged pupils': https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/approaches-to-supporting-disadvantaged-pupils . He was also the Project Director and principle investigator for the evaluation of the Autism Education Trust's Department for Education sponsored AET Programme 2017-2018.

He is the course lead on the MA module, Early Intervention. In addition, he is a lead researcher on the REducing the risk of criminal exploitation using multiSystEmic Therapy evaluation, funded by the Youth Endowment Fund. He is also a lead researcher on the Family Lives' Parent Child Plus project.

HISTORY RESEARCH:

He also has interests in 20th Century history, and has published and broadcast on British fascism, the cultural history of the Great War, the Communist Party of Great Britain, Jewish political activism, and the Home Guard. He is the author of 'Jews in the Communist Party of Great Britain: Perceptions of Ethnicity and Class', in Matthew Hoffman & Henry Srebrnik (eds), A Vanished Ideology from SUNY Press.

Biography

Dr Stephen M Cullen is a Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for Educational Development, Appraisal and Research (CEDAR). His background is in teaching, having taught economics, politics, and history at schools, including Eton, and for the Open University. He holds an M.A. (Hons) in politics and economic history from the University of Edinburgh, an M.Litt. in political history from the University of Oxford, and a D.Phil. in modern history from the University of Oxford. He studied at Nuffield College, Oxford, and Wolfson College, Oxford.
