Project Title

Insects

To develop students’ understanding of tonal mark-making, shading, texture, and precision while exploring artist analysis and sustainable art practices.

Year 8 at Princethorpe College

Students studied the intricate work of artist Alex Konahin, analysing his use of tonal mark-making to create detailed and precise insect drawings. They explored shading, texture, and fine details to enhance their observational drawing skills. Building on this, they transitioned into metal embossing, incorporating Renaissance-inspired decorative motifs. Using recycled cans, they experimented with relief techniques to create embossed insect designs, reinforcing the importance of sustainability in art.

How can detailed observational drawing and sustainable materials be used to develop students' technical skills and environmental awareness in art?
