Previous Years Initiatives

  • Established a new Wellbeing, Equality, Diversity & Gender (WEDG) Group to further develop and embed a Departmental culture that engages with all staff and provides a forum for open discussion on gender, diversity and well being issues.
  • Introduced a new role of ‘Advisor to Female Students’ to engage with and support female students at all levels.
  • Implemented exit interviews as standard to explore further the reasons why staff leave and establish whether there is a gender dimension, especially for female academics.
  • We attend the AEA meeting each year to recruit assistant professors: this year, in response to feedback from female students, we held all of our interviews in a conference room rather than a hotel bedroom (as is normal practice for most recruiting institutions at the AEA meeting). We believe a more formal setting enables all candidates (males and female) to perform at their best, rather than being distracted by their surroundings.
  • Included 'Gender, Equality and Diversity' as a standing item on our Student/Staff Liaison Committee (SSLC) meetings, to ensure that we formally discuss and collect student views on these issues. These committee meetings are the main forum in which we meet with and respond to issues raised by the students. The SSLC committees also report into the departmental Teaching and Learning Committee, so that issues raised are dealt with at the highest level.
