You Said So We Did

We have worked together to implement some real improvements to your teaching and learning experience

We listen very carefully to all student feedback from both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

The examples below show a large number of important changes that have been implemented as a direct result of your feedback and are a testament to both student and staff dedication to provide the best education possible.

    Teaching

    You said...

You would like the opportunity to study real maths analysis in the MSc curriculum

    So we...

.. organised weekly lectures in the Spring Term and are planning to offer these again next year to help students planning to do a PhD programme after their MSc.

    You said...

The quality of teaching was high and you liked practical real life examples and learning more about new theories.

    So we...

... intend to develop the core macro and micro modules and will incorporate these suggestions of new theoretical material and applications. Future cohorts of students will benefit from your helpful feedback. Thank you.

    You said...

You value the quality of the teaching and learning in the Department

    So we...

... set up a teaching observation process for all Teaching Assistants and new Teaching Fellows, as well as a workshop for teaching staff and introduced a new Peer Observation process to share best practice

    MRes:

    You said...

You wanted more flexibility with regard to the choice of option modules in year two of the programme.

    So we...

... remodelled the second year of the MRes/PhD programme to give students more flexibility with regard to option modules they wish to follow, including being able to take modules from other departments as part of the requirements for the MRes

    Engagement

    You said...

You would like more contact with staff and better academic and pastoral support.

    So we...

... organised daily drop-in sessions with the academic and pastoral support team for students who want to discuss any issues. We also hold ‘Coffee and Cake’ sessions with three senior members of staff, during which students can chat about any course issues.

    You said...

An hour was sometimes not long enough to get through all the material covered in Support and Feedback classes.

    So we...

... agreed to review the appropriateness of volume and timing of classes, and teaching teams will use your feedback to revise seminar material

    Assessment

    You said...

you wanted generic feedback on your examination performance.

    So we...

...provided the provisional mark distribution for the Micro and Macro January exams. This feedback will help you see how well you are doing relative to the overall standard and aid your subsequent learning strategy. We will also be extending exam feedback to include statements on what was done well and poorly by the cohort for each exam paper for MSc students in September 2019.

    You said...

reading time in the Micro and Macro January exams should be provided.

    So we...

... agreed to introduce 15 minutes reading time next year on the grounds that students would benefit from the opportunity to read through and reflect on the full question paper at the outset.

    You said...

you wanted more feedback on your progress in the Autumn Term.

    So we...

…are planning to introduce new coursework in Micro, Macro and Econometrics A and reduce the weighting of the final exams next year. Coursework during the first term will provide an earlier guide to progress and challenge you to produce your best work.

    Dissertation

    You said...

you valued the skills and subject knowledge of your supervisor and would like more support to help plan your dissertation.

    So we...

… have redesigned the process of allocating supervisors so that you know who will be supervising you at an early stage. We also created a resource of frequently asked questions to help answer some of your common dissertation questions.

    MRes:

    You said...

you would like more support in planning your dissertation and more information about the required standard for the dissertation.

    So we...

... We organised a dissertation workshop where we provided more information about the MRes dissertation and where the previous cohort of MRes students shared their experience of the MRes dissertation with current students.

    Organisation

    You said...

you would like to be involved in decisions about how your course is run and you would like us to make it clearer how we have acted upon the feedback you give to us

    So we...

… overhauled the Module Evaluation process, improved and formalised the way in which we report back to you on issues that you raise. We involved the SSLC in action planning arising from PTES results, and improved email and website communications.

    MRes:

    You said...

you would like more guidance and support when you start your course.

    So we...

... delivered a revised and expanded MRes induction session in autumn 2018.

    Resources

    You said...

you would like the sense of community for Economics students to be stronger.

    So we...

... are planning new study and social spaces for both undergraduates and MSc students respectively. We are hoping to launch these new spaces during the first part of academic year 2019-20

    Skills Development

    You said...

you would like the opportunity to develop your presentation skills during your course.

    So we...

organised presentation skills training sessions and introduced group presentations in the core Econometrics modules.

    You said...

you would like more information on working after your studies for Tier 4 students.

    So we...

introduced a new session on work visa options in the Spring Term.
