360 Guest Lecture - David Goodhart - 8 January 2018

On Monday 8 January 2018, 6-7pm in the Oculus (OC0.03), journalist, author and think tanker David Goodhart will visit Warwick to discuss ideas from his latest book "The Road to Somewhere: The New Tribes Shaping British Politics" which became the Sunday Times Top Ten bestseller earlier this year. CAGE granted access to US Census Data

CAGE has been granted access to full-count restricted-use U.S. Census files from 1850 to 1940 following a successful application. Read more about it here.

Winter Graduation 2018 - Save the date!

The date has now been set for the 2018 Winter Graduation ceremony. This will take place on Friday 19 January at 3pm. This ceremony will be followed by a reception at 5.15pm in Panorama Room, Rootes Building, for all these students, their families and friends to toast and celebrate their achievements. All staff are invited to join in with the festivities so please do save the date and come along if you can.

Welcome 2018 - ideas/suggestion?

September 2018 will see the introduction of Warwick's first teaching-free Warwick Welcome Week (w/c 24 September 2018). Welcome Week is for all new students starting at the University of Warwick in September 2018. This includes undergraduates, postgraduate taught and research students. Tailored events and activities will be available to students from different backgrounds.

Currently in the planning stages, the University is working with Departments to capture ideas of what Welcome Week could involve. More information regarding the plans so far, including their vision statement, can be found on their Welcome 2018 webpage. If you have any suggestions to put forward you can contact the Economics Welcome Representatives Charlotte White (Charlotte.White@warwick.ac.uk) or Elizabeth Jones (Elizabeth.H.Jones@warwick.ac.uk), or alternatively, you could share your ideas here.

Students' Question Time 2018 - Student 1 minute videos

The Department's annual Students' QT 2018 will be held on 22 January 2018 and as part of the process for selecting the panellists, we are requesting students to submit a 1 minute video of themselves discussing the topic "current affairs". Could we ask all academic teaching staff to encourage their students to participate by going to the Students' QT 2018 webpage and uploading their videos.

Course Achievement - Mazaffar Meharban

Mazaffar Meharban (Maz) has successfully completed his Professional Certificate in SEM (Search Engine Marketing) with the Institute of Direct Marketing ( IDM) which was supported through HR and Department.

Staff Annoucement - Joe Meade

Joseph Meade will be joining the Marketing Team as Marketing and Recruitment Officer on Monday 11 December. He will be with us for 6 months to cover Chrissie Elliot Duxson’s secondment to External Affairs. Many of you will already know Joseph as he worked in the Department on a temporary basis over the summer.

We very much looking forward to welcoming Joseph back.

Arun Advani delivered a presentation on “The dynamic effect of tax audits” to HMRC on Friday 1st December, including being introduced by Jim Harra (the incoming co-head of HMRC). Arun is also presenting today at the BREAD-NBER conference in Boston on 'Insurance Networks and Poverty Traps'.

Arun Advani's paper 'Credibly Identifying Social Effects: Accounting for Network Formation and Measurement Error' has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Economic Surveys.

Alessandro Castagnetti and Assistant professor Sebastiano Massaro (WBS) will be presenting a paper on 'The Influence of Anger on Cooperative Strategic Interactions: An Interdisciplinary Experimental Study' at the 7th Israel Strategy Conference in Haifa on Tuesday 19 December. This is a joint work with Prof. Eugenio Proto, Prof. Sebastiano Massaro and Alessandro.

Matteo Gamalerio presented his paper ‘Not welcome anymore: the effect of electoral incentives on the reception of refugees' at two workshops in Germany.

The first was on Tuesday the 28th of November, in Munich at the Max Planck Institute. The title of the workshop was 'Advances in Political Economy and Public Economics'.

The second was in Dresden at the Ifo Institute on Saturday the 2nd of December. The title of the workshop was '11th Workshop on Political Economy'.

Peter Hammond gave the following two talks:

• Seminar at Université Cergy-Pontoise on Thursday 16th November, of a paper being written with Graciela Chichilnisky and Nicholas Stern; "Should We Discount the Welfare of Future Generations? Ramsey and Suppes versus Koopmans and Arrow"
• Keynote presentation on Saturday 18th November to the Lancaster Game Theory Conference; "A Notion of Statistical Equilibrium for Large Games of Incomplete Information"

Sascha Becker gave a keynote lecture at the 10th Australasian Public Choice Conference in Melbourne on Tue 5th December..
