360 Guest Lecture - Vinay Gupta - 29 January 2018

Our 4th Guest Lecture speaker will be Vinay Gupta, the co-founder of Mattereum and a leading figure in the blockchain space, who will be talking about cryptocurrencies and the uptake of the blockchain in all its applications. This event is being held on 29 January 2018, 6-7.30pm in Oculus (OC1.05) and is in partnership with Virtual Futures. Read more about Vinay on the event's page and register to attend.

360 Guest Lecture - David Goodhart - 8 January 2018

On Monday 8 January 2018, 6-7pm in the Oculus (OC0.03), journalist, author and think tanker David Goodhart will visit Warwick to discuss ideas from his latest book "The Road to Somewhere: The New Tribes Shaping British Politics" which became the Sunday Times Top Ten bestseller earlier this year. Offer Holders Open Days - Coming soon!

The Department hosts Offer Holders Open Days throughout the year to allow prospective students to find out more about studying Economics at Warwick from our academic staff and current students. The first OHOD will be held on Wednesday 14 February from 12.30 - 3.00pm. These events are a valuable conversion opportunity and past feedback received has been positive.

We encourage staff to participate and attend these events, so please save the below dates in your diary. Communication will be sent in the new year to ask for academic and administrative support.

Winter Graduation 2018 - Save the date!

The date has now been set for the 2018 Winter Graduation ceremony. This will take place on Friday 19 January at 3pm. This ceremony will be followed by a reception at 5.15pm in Panorama Room, Rootes Building, for all these students, their families and friends to toast and celebrate their achievements. All staff are invited to join in with the festivities so please do save the date and come along if you can.

Charlotte White has sent out an email to all staff reminding them of the Ceremony and to please save the date. Food will be ordered so please confirm your attendance by emailing her at Charlotte dot White at warwick dot ac dot uk

Welcome 2018 - ideas/suggestion?

September 2018 will see the introduction of Warwick's first teaching-free Warwick Welcome Week (w/c 24 September 2018). Welcome Week is for all new students starting at the University of Warwick in September 2018. This includes undergraduates, postgraduate taught and research students. Tailored events and activities will be available to students from different backgrounds.

Update - The Academic Induction Workshop has been taken and you can view the slides from the meeting which was attended by Elizabeth and Charlotte. This is one of a series of workshops which will take place surrounding Welcome 2018 and all staff are encouraged to contribute ideas and suggestions either by attending workshops or submitting ideas to the Economics Welcome Reps (Charlotte White and Elizabeth Jones) or directly online.

Students' Question Time 2018 - Student 1 minute videos

The Department's annual Students' QT 2018 will be held on 22 January 2018 and as part of the process for selecting the panellists, we are requesting students to submit a 1 minute video of themselves discussing the topic "current affairs".

Update -The deadline for submitting student videos has been extended to midnight on Monday 8 January 2018. Could we ask all academic teaching staff to encourage their students to upload their video to the Students' QT 2018 webpage.

New member of staff - PG Office

We have a new starter in the Postgraduate Office, Andrea Wyld, Andrea will be joining us from the Centre of Lifelong Learning and will be replacing Sue Rattigan who retires from the Department on Friday 22 December. Andrea will have a short handover with Sue prior to Sue leaving, and will begin full time in the Postgraduate Office on Monday 8 January 2018. We are very much looking forward to welcoming her to the Department.

Publications, Presentations & Talks


Andrew Oswald's article 'Unhappy and Pain in Modern America: A Review Essay' was accepted for publication in The Journal of Economic Literature.

Andrew Oswald delivered a speech at H.M. Treasury in London on how to build well-being data and equations into the public-expenditure Green Book on Monday 18th December.

Mark Harrison’s paper “Counting the Soviet Union’s War Dead: Still 26-27 Million,” has been accepted for publication in Europe-Asia Studies.

Arun Advani presented "Insurance Networks and Poverty Traps" at a seminar on Tuesday 12th December at the World Bank.

Sascha O. Becker presented his work on the Counter-Reformation (joint with Francisco Pino and Jordi Vidal-Robert) at the SciencesPo workshop “Urban Economics and City Growth: Human Capital and Public Infrastructures” at KEDGE Business School in Bordeaux, France on Thursday 21st December.

Bhaskar Dutta gave a seminar on "Coalition Formation and History Dependence" at the Institute of Economic and Social Research, Osaka University on 18th December.

Eugenio Proto's paper “Intelligence Personality and Gains from Cooperation in Repeated Interactions” (joint with Aldo Rustichini and Andis Sofianos former PHD student at Warwick) has been accepted for publication to the Journal of Political Economy,

Dennis Novy gave a seminar at Sciences Po/Paris School of Economics on international trade and currency unions.
