Celebrating 60 Years of Warwick Economics: Past, Present and Future

On Saturday 22 November 2025, the Department of Economics proudly marked a major milestone: 60 years of Warwick Economics. As part of the University’s Alumni Reunion Day, we welcomed alumni, staff, and friends back to campus for an afternoon of reflection, discussion, and celebration.

The event, held in the Oculus, brought together around 100 alumni alongside current and former members of the Department. Under the theme “Past, Present and Future”, attendees explored the evolution of economics at Warwick, shared memorable moments from teaching and research, and looked ahead to the challenges and opportunities shaping the discipline.

Opening the celebration, Head of Department Professor Jeremy Smith highlighted the significance of the occasion:

“This afternoon is more than a celebration of time passed. It is a celebration of the people, ideas, and values that have shaped this department into one of the most respected centres of economic thought and research in the world. As we mark this 60th anniversary, we do so with deep gratitude — for your continued engagement, for your support of future generations, and for the legacy you help us uphold. Thank you for being here and thank you for being part of our story.”

A highlight of the programme was the panel discussion, moderated by Professor Robin Naylor, Deputy Head of Department (Staffing), featuring distinguished voices from our community:

  • Professor Bishnupriya Gupta – Research Director of CAGE and Co-Editor of the Journal of Economic History
  • Professor Mark Harrison – Emeritus Professor and former Head of Department (2005–2008)
  • Alan Roe – Honorary Professorial Fellow and former Head of Department (1983–1986)
  • Geoff Renshaw – Honorary Research Fellow
  • Sukrita Chatterji – (BSc Economics, Politics and International Studies, 2012), Head of Client Strategy and Analytics, Investment Banking, Barclays

Their insights sparked lively discussion on Warwick’s academic journey and the future of economics in an ever-changing global landscape.

Following the panel, guests enjoyed drinks and networking, reconnecting with old friends and forging new connections across generations of Warwick economists.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined us for this special occasion, and to our panellists for sharing their expertise and experiences. Your contributions made the celebration truly memorable.

Here’s to the next 60 years of innovation, collaboration, and impact at Warwick Economics.
