Basic economic literacy should be part of the National Curriculum

CAGE support for the Department for Education Curriculum and Assessment Review: Royal Economic Society and Discover Economics Response

We welcome the response to the Department for Education’s Curriculum and Assessment Review by the Royal Economic Society Discover Economics campaign. Basic economic literacy should be part of the national curriculum. It is an essential requirement for democratic participation and to ensure that children are given the best start in life.

The CAGE research centre uses economic analysis to address real world policy issues. Partnering with Discover Economics has enabled us to reach groups of young people who might ordinarily see a career in economics as inaccessible.

We are experts in independent analysis and the way historical factors underpin the growth and development of a country. By looking at economics through a historical and geographical lens we believe that this non-traditional approach to economic literacy helps to widen young people’s horizons and career options whatever their background or interests.
