Abstract: The number of available options in charitable donations has grown over the past few years, with donors increasingly able to customise their donations to determine where their money will go. This opens up the question of whether too many choices is good or bad for charities and for donors. Drawing on the literature on the paradox of choice, we plan to run a within-subjects experiment in order to determine how increasing the number of options affects the amount given, the number of choices which are made actively, and satisfaction with the choices made. We hope to contribute to the existing literature, which has focused mostly on individual rather than pro-social choices.
