In the automotive retail sector, over 34% of the workforce is employed in the skilled trades in 2008. This is a reflection of the high number of technicians in the sector. There is also a high share of managers and senior officials, which reflects the high proportion of small independent traders in this sector. Sales and customer service occupations are also well represented in the sector compared to the proportion for all sectors.

The number of jobs in the UK automotive retail sector is forecast to increase between 2007 and 2017. A net increase of 11,000 jobs are forecast, an increase of 2%. In addition, there will also be a replacement demand (due to retirement, migration and occupational mobility) of 213,000 jobs. The total net requirement will be some 224,000 jobs, accounting for just over a third of all employment in 2017.

The forecast net requirement shows that sales and customer service occupations (29%) and managers and senior officials (21%) together account for half of the job requirements between 2007-2017.

Occupational skills gaps

In 2007, internal skills gaps were:

  • 10% managerial
  • 2% professional staff
  • 4% associate professionals
  • 13% administration staff
  • 34% skilled trades
  • Less than 1% personal service staff
  • 20% sales and customer service staff
  • 8% elementary staff
  • 8% machine operatives

Skills gaps were mainly in: technical and practical skills (57%); problems solving skills (35%); and customer handling skills (40%).
