North East

There are 19,680 people in the sector workforce in the region, representing 3% of the UK sector workforce. 38% of the workforce is self-employed. 63% of the workforce is male. 96% of the sector workforce is white and 53% are under 40 years.

Sector employment in the North East has grown by 23% since 2006, compared with 9% across the UK sector.

There are 1,330 creative businesses in the region, of which 90% employ less than 50 people. 7% of businesses have a turnover of over £1million. 12% of businesses experienced difficulty recruiting (compared with 12% across the UK average). 28% of businesses reported applicant lacked skills, less than 1% said that applicants lack qualifications and 20% of businesses reported skills gaps.
