There are 59,580 people in the sector workforce in the region, representing 9% of the UK sector workforce. 34% of the workforce is self-employed; the majority of who are in arts and music. 62% of the workforce is male. 95% of the sector workforce is white and 55% are under 40 years.
Before the recession, sector employment in the North West had grown by 28% since 2006, compared with 9% across the UK sector.
There are 5,660 creative businesses in the region, of which 91% employ less than 50 people. 7% of businesses have a turnover of over £1million. 12% of businesses experienced difficulty recruiting (compared with 12% across the UK average), 74% reported applicants lacked skills and experience, and 26% reported skills gaps.
