There are 40,300 people in the sector workforce in the region, representing 6% of the UK sector workforce. 31% of the workforce is self-employed, which is the lowest regional figure. 58% of the workforce is male. 91% of the sector workforce is white and 49% are under 40 years.
Before the recession, sector employment in the West Midlands had declined by 6% since 2006, compared with 9% growth across the UK sector.
There are approximately 5,000 creative businesses in the region, of which 91% employ less than 50 people. 8% of businesses have a turnover of over £1million. 12% of businesses experienced difficulty recruiting (compared with 12% across the UK average). 54% of businesses said that applicant lacked skills and 40% said that applicants lacked experience (compared with 33% across the UK average).25% of businesses reported applicants lacked motivation or the right attitude and 26% had skills gaps.
