Yorkshire and Humberside

The Yorkshire and Humber food and drink manufacturing sector generates £7.1 billion turnover annually, accounting for 12% of England’s sector turnover. The sector employs an estimated 52,700 people. It accounts for 15% of the food and drink manufacturing sector’s workforce in England. Sector employment is concentrated in North Yorkshire (20%), NE Lincolnshire (10%), Hull (8%), Wakefield (8%) and Leeds (7%). In Yorkshire and the Humber mean gross weekly pay is £417 per week.

There are more than 1,300 workplaces in the Yorkshire and the Humber food and drink manufacturing sector, accounting for 14% of English sector workplaces. 64% of staff work in organisations of between 1 and 10 staff, and only 6% work in organisations of over 200 staff.

Yorkshire and the Humber food and drinks sector makes up 17% of the region’s total manufacturing workforce.

Between 2000 and 2007, 17,400 jobs were lost, equivalent to a 25% drop in employment levels (a bigger decline than the UK sector average of –17%). The bakery and meat processing sub-sectors dominate Yorkshire and the Humber employment in the sector; accounting for 27% and 20% of the region’s sector employment, respectively.

Workforce statistics:

  • 68% of the workforce is male.
  • Men tend to dominate in the oils and fats, beverages, dairy and fish processing sub-sectors and women account for a greater than average share in the milling and starches, fruit and vegetables, bakery and confectionery sub-sectors.
  • Between 2000 and 2007, the male share of the workforce declined from 43,000 to 35,700 workers (-17% drop in employment levels), whereas the female share of the workforce declined from 27,100 to 16,900 workers (-25% drop in numbers).
  • 90% of the workforce is employed full-time.
  • 24% of all female workers are employed part-time, compared with 4% of all male workers.
  • The majority of employees are aged 20-24 years (16%) and 40-44 years (16%).
  • A third of the current workforce will be eligible for retirement in the next 20 years.
  • 87% of Yorkshire and the Humber sector employees are white, 6% are Asian/Asian British, 1% are Black or Black British, and 6% Other Ethnic Group.
  • 10,900 non-UK nationals are estimated to be working in the sector.
  • 5% of sector workers in the Yorkshire and the Humber have some form of work-limiting disability; 3% are registered as work-limiting disabled only and 2% are registered as DDA disabled and work-limiting disabled. A further 5% are registered as DDA disabled.
  • 7,900 workers (17%) in sector have no qualifications, compared with the UK sector average (14%).
  • 7,600 workers (16%) in the sector hold their highest qualification at Level 4 or above.

Vacancies and skills:

  • 20% of employers in sector report vacancies, compared with the English sector average (16%).
  • 3% of sector employers have hard-to-fill vacancies, which is a slightly lower than the English sector average (5%). While 1% of employers report vacancies that are hard-to-fill due to skills shortages (English sector average 2%).
  • 16% of sector employers in the region have workforce skills gaps.
  • Skills gaps are for process, plant and machine operatives (6%) and manager (6%) job roles.
  • Total employment in the Yorkshire and the Humber food and drink manufacturing sector is forecast to fall by approximately 7% between 2007-2017.
  • Despite the decline in employment numbers, projections indicate that the sector in the region will need 17,000 new recruits between 2007-2017.
