East Midlands


  • There are approximately 12,100 hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism establishments in the East Midlands.
  • 75% of these establishments are ‘pubs, bars and nightclubs’ or ‘restaurants’.
  • Derbyshire unitary authority area has the largest number of sector establishments in the East Midlands, 19% of all sector establishments in the region.
  • Over 3 quarters of sector establishments employ between 1 and 10 people.


  • Approximately 146,700 people work in the sector in the East Midlands.
  • Over a quarter of all those working in the sector work in restaurants and 23% work in hospitality services.
  • 64% of people working in the sector are female.
  • There is an even split between those who work on a full and part-time basis.
  • Almost a fifth of the workforce is aged between 16-19years, while a further 20% are aged between 20-24 years.


  • Over half of the workforce is employed in what are classified as ‘elementary occupations’, such as kitchen assistants, waiting staff and bar staff.
  • 19% work as managers or senior officials while 9% work in skilled trade occupations.


  • The number of vacancies being advertised for core sector jobs in Jobcentres in the East Midlands fell from 2,108 in May 2008 to 1,919 in May 2009.
  • The largest number of vacancies was for kitchen and catering assistants, chefs and cooks and waiters and waitresses.
  • 7% of sector establishments report that they have hard-to-fill vacancies, compared with 8% across the whole economy.

Workforce skills

  • Approximately 57% of the sector’s employees are qualified to Level 1 and entry level or Level 2. 19% have qualifications at Level 3. 14% have qualifications at Level 4. The remaining 9% possess no qualifications.
  • 16% of employers in the East Midlands reported skills gaps in their current workforce.
  • Employers report that 9% of staff (9,800) are not fully proficient in their jobs.
