Warwick Law School in India
Warwick Law School has developed various collaborative activities with Indian colleagues at a variety of institutions. We were privileged to have Professor Upendra Baxi as a member of staff for a number of years and now as an honoured Emeritus Professor. The Law School continues to be involved in a range of projects, this page provides a flavour of these activities.
Kapila and Nirmal Hingorani Internship
We are now in our second year of offering our students the opportunity to undertake a funded internship in India relating to the area of Public Interest Litigation, through a joint initiative between Warwick Law School and the Kapila and Nirmal Hingorani Foundation. Our first lucky student Ben Havard spent a rewarding and productive time in New Delhi, April 2015, exploring issues relating to Environmental Regulation. Later this year, our second intern, Davide Cerrato will be heading to Delhi to consider the struggles over the right to water in India.
Lacuna Magazine, the online magazine published by the Centre for Human Rights and Practice at Warwick Law School, holds links with Action Village India (AVI), a UK-based charity working for change with partner organisations in rural India. In summer 2015 AVI and Lacuna developed a programme of human rights activities during Womad festival (hosted at Madras Café) which included poetry workshops, discussion boards, pop-up conversations about human rights and interviews. Fiona Smith
Fiona is currently working on a project that explores the legality of India’s Public Stockholding Programme under the World Trade Organisation’s (WTO)’s rules on subsidies in the context of a discussion of how food is, or should be regulated to meet India’s food security commitments to its citizens. The project is part of a book on ‘Food in International Economic Law.’ For more information click here.
Dwijen Rangnekar: In Memoriam
The Law School will take the opportunity to celebrate the life and work of our colleague Dr Dwijen Rangnekar, who sadly died late last year, at the Symposium Beyond Development? New Imaginaries of Law and Social Justice, to be held in April 2016.
