Abstract

'Preserving the Revolutionary Tradition: The Perplexing Politics of Hannah Arendt'

Hannah Arendt’s 1963 monograph, On Revolution, is not easy to decipher. Some treat it simply as a rejection of the 'old left' (because of the terror associated with the French revolutionary tradition). Some treat it as a tribute to the constitutionalism of the American revolutionary tradition. And some say that Arendt identified council democracy as the 'lost treasure' of the modern revolutionary tradition. I find myself reading the book more 'dialectically', that is, as an analysis of the developmental forms of the modern revolutionary tradition in which there are no fixed ideals and no absolute end. Steering a path between abandonment of the revolutionary tradition because of its disfigurements and idealisation of the revolutionary tradition regardless of its disfigurements, the call of Arendt’s text, as I see it, is to humanise the revolutionary tradition and thus to preserve it. The paradoxical slogan I would coin for Arendt's politics is that of 'revolutionary moderation'.

The research seminars will be held in S2.12 and will start at 12:30pm with lunch in S2.09 and the seminar will formally start at 1pm.

It was would be great to see as many attendees as possible to show our gratitude to Robert for taking time out of his busy schedule to present to us.
