Title: 'Film, censorship and women’s rights in Hong Kong: Raped by an Angel'
The early 1990s witnessed an increasing entrenchment of women’s rights in Hong Kong that culminated in the enactment of a sex discrimination ordinance as well as the extension of CEDAW to the territory. In the world of film, however, this was a period characterized by the proliferation and popularization of local productions premised on depictions of extreme sexual violence against women. A particularly controversial genre was the ‘case file film’, or films based on real-life, clinical cases of sexual depravity. Case file films were not classified as hardcore pornography and were shown at mainstream cinemas. This paper will explore the curious interactions between women, film, and the law through an examination of Wong Jing and Lau Wai Keung’s Raped by an Angel (1993), a film which proved popular locally when it was first released and which has since become a cult classic in world cinema.
