GLOBE Seminar - Intersecting Inequalities: BME Women and Austerity by Dr Mary-Ann Stephenson
The GLOBE Centre welcomes back Warwick Law School alumni, Dr Mary-Ann Stephenson, Co-Director of the UK Women's Budget Group, to discuss their latest report on 'Intersecting Inequalities: Black and Minority Ethnic Women and Austerity'.The report is part of a larger project by the Omen's Budget Group and the Runnymeade Trust to analyse the impact of govenment budgets and spending reviews by gender, race and income.'Intersecting Inequalities' looks at the cumulative impact of UK spending cuts since 2010 on BME women. It is the first intersectional analysis of the cumulative impact of austerity using both qualitative and quantitative data. The report was researched and written in partnership with Coventry Women’s Voices and RECLAIM, a Manchester-based youth leadership and social change charity. The report shows that for BME women, gender inequalities intersect with and compound racial inequalities making these women particularly vulnerable to cuts to benefits, tax credits and public services. This report shows the extent to which the BME women, and the poorest BME women in particular, are disproportionately affected by the UK's government spending cuts since 2010.
