As Director of Administration, Maria is responsible for the overall leadership, management and development of the administrative team. She has oversight of the various support functions within the School that enable our scholarly activity to take place – including academic administration, research administration, finance, IT, communications and the Head of School’s Office. For several months every year, she is occupied with the five-year planning process, where the School agrees targets with the University for matters such as student numbers and research income. She works with the Head of School and the rest of the senior management team in Law to negotiate resources, including office/teaching space and posts, and develops business cases to support strategic developments in Law. Maria works on various strategic projects as they arise, for example she supported the Institutional Teaching and Learning Review, and helped write Law’s recent Athena Swan Bronze application. She is a member of the School’s Management Committee and Equality and Diversity Committee, and acts as Health and Safety Officer.
Having studied modern languages, linguistics and phonetics at undergraduate and Masters level, Maria began her career in speech technology research, working in a multi-disciplinary team with mathematicians and computer scientists in order to develop new applications for speech recognition and synthesis. She moved into Higher Education via research project management, before developing a more generalist interest in university administration. Maria has worked at the University of Warwick since January 2010. She was initially based at Warwick Medical School as a Research Development Officer, and also worked as Senior Assistant Registrar in the Graduate School, before joining Warwick Law School as Director of Administration in September 2014. Maria is a registered PRINCE2 project manager, and holds a certificate in Coaching and Mentoring.
