The evolution of sovereignty in historical perspective

- Export as iCalendar
Location: S2.77

IAS Residential Fellow Carsten-Andreas Schulz (Pontificia Universidad Católica of Chile) and Anna Ross (Warwick, History) will draw on historical research from different countries and time periods to discuss how concepts and practices of sovereignty have evolved. Dr Schulz will draw on research about South American engagements with international society in the 19th and early 20th century, including the interactions of new states with ideas of territorial sovereignty and local indigenous populations. Dr Ross will discuss her new project on changing German practices of sovereignty in the 20th century, particularly as they relate to property. Though their work emerges from different contexts, both explore the relation of sovereignty with state-building and international relations. We to spark an engaging discussion on the changing role and understandings of sovereignty in different historical and geographical contexts in both IR and History.
