Lucy Hatton

I recently completed my PhD in the Department of Politics and International Studies at the University of Warwick. From April to September 2016 I was also an Early Career Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Study, before taking up a permanent position as Academic Tutor for Politics and International Relations with the Warwick International Foundation Programme in September 2016. Democratic Legitimacy and the European Citizens' Initiative: A recipe for disappointment and disaffection?

My research considers issues of democracy and legitimacy in the European Union. The focus of my doctoral research was the recently launched European Citizens' Initiative: a mechanism by which the citizens of the EU can propose new EU legislation, and I am investigating the extent to which this can impact upon the democratic legitimacy of the EU. My thesis also draws on questions of the effectiveness of mechanisms of participatory democracy more widely, particularly with a transnational focus, as well as raising the important issue of the existence of a European 'demos' and the significance of this for the EU's democratic deficit.

My interests therefore include democratic theory, particularly participatory democracy; legitimacy; representation and popular participation; mechanisms of direct democracy; the EU's democratic deficit, and Euroscepticism, particularly in the UK.

My research project were funded by an ESRC DTC Studentship, and my supervisors were Professor Michael Saward and Professor John Parkinson . I passed my viva in May 2016.

From 2013-16 I was a seminar tutor for the first year undergraduate module 'Introduction to Politics' in PaIS. I have gained a Postgraduate Award in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education and am an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Please see my teaching tab for more information.

In addition from 2014 to 2016 I was employed as a student mentor and moderator for IGGY, an educational and social network for gifted young people around the world, moderating the online discussions and creating engaging academic content for bright 13 to 18 year old students.

I have also worked as a Tutor for The Brilliant Club, a social enterprise with the objective of widening participation in higher education, delivering tutorials on the European Union to secondary school pupils.

In 2013 I acted as the co-convenor of the Critical International and Political Studies (CRIPS) Graduate Working Group.
