The study of democratisation dynamics is an ongoing process which requires a constant focus on current affairs. The CSD Observatory on Democracy is a space for researchers and students to keep updated by sharing, analysing and debating pieces of news, articles on journals and multimedia related to the adventures and misadventures of democracy worldwide.

The Observatory is organized by GEO-POLITICAL AREAS

Every area has got different sections:

In the news (the main area-page): What is happening in the world? Elections? Liberalising or de-liberalising Reforms? New Parties? Articles from the national and international press.

Focus on literature: What has been published about democratisation processes, theories, obstacles in Academic journals? The state of art in democratisation literature.

Under our spotlight (forthcoming): What is the meaning of the recent developments? How do we interpret them? Students' analyses and open questions about current affairs.

Multimedia: Photo galleries, Videos, Facebook pages et alia.

Final speech in the film The Great Dictator by Charlie Chaplin in 1940:

“You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure. (...) Then, in the name of democracy, let us use that power! Let us all unite! Let us fight for a new world, a decent world that will give men a chance to work, that will give youth the future and old age a security.”

More than 70 years later, but still a very relevant speech...
