Vaccines and Misinformation Conference Summary

On 21st-22nd September 2022, DEMOS the University of Warwick convened policy and technical experts with academics working in the areas of epistemology and public health for conversations informed by both applied and philosophical perspectives on vaccine hesitancy. Having moved past the most acute phase of the pandemic, we aimed for the conference to offer space to reflect on and share research into drivers of vaccine misinformation. With an eye on what interventions could be made now and in the future as Covid becomes endemic and a winter spike looms, the conference also focused on exploring solutions aiming to counter misinformation about vaccines.

On the 3rd-4th November 2022, The University of Cologne convened a conference titled the Epistemology of Probability and Risk to reflect on how the interpretation of probability and risk can impact reasoning. On the 13th-14th November 2022, The Universities of Warwick and Strathclyde convened a conference titled the The Psychology of Vaccine Hesitancy to reflect on the key psychological and social reasons for vaccine hesitancy among different groups.. The following summary provides a survey of the key conference highlights, drawing attention to the application of these ideas to the rationality of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy.
