Sir David Omand GCB is a visiting professor in the War Studies Department at King's College London. He is a former Director of GCHQ and was appointed in 2002 as the first UK Security and Intelligence Coordinator, and Permanent Secretary in the Cabinet Office where he was instrumental in developing the UK’s CONTEST counter-terrorism strategy. He served for seven years on the Joint Intelligence Committee. He was Permanent Secretary of the Home Office from 1997 to 2000, and before that Director of the UK signals intelligence agency, GCHQ. He is the senior independent director of Babcock International Group plc, a Trustee of the Natural History Museum London and an honorary fellow of Corpus Christi College Cambridge. His book, Securing the State, was published by C. Hurst (Publishers) Ltd and Columbia University Press in 2010.
