East Asian Development Policies

The module seeks to enable you to make meaningful comparisons between the conduct of public policy across a range of states in both Northeast and Southeast Asia. The module will focus on a number of different policy areas that have played important roles in the economic development of East Asian states. These policy areas (which include industrial policy, agricultural policy, gender and development, trade policy) are analysed in relation to broader debates about the rise and possible decline of the Asian developmental state and the incursion of more neoliberal compatible approaches to policy-making in the region. The module will focus on a wide range of country case studies, providing you with a comprehensive overview of economic development policy making in East Asia.
